We raise the Vos Maeri Eclectus, Solomon Island, and Red Sided. While opinions on these guys vary from breeder to breeder, we constantly maintain that the Vos Maeri have a temperament that is very even from babies through to adults. These guys are way quieter than most other birds in the same "size" category. They have their moments, though, where they can get loud, but on the most part, they are very quiet, and fairly good talkers. All Eclectus males are varying degrees of green, and the females are varying shades of red. One of the most striking feathers is that the females have a large band of yellow on the end of their tail on the underside. The Vos Maeri do not have as much blue/violet on the breast, however, the yellow band makes up for it. Diet wise on these guys, their requirements are very different from most other parrots. While it is not recommended to feed any bird straight seed, the eclectus do not benefit from it at all. The Eclectus do not assimilate fat from seed like other birds do, so a fatty diet is not necessary. We feed Volkman Eclectus because of the millet, sunflower, pepper, pumpkin seed. Also added to their diet is semi cooked sweet potatoes, pumpkin and squashes (yellow and orange for Vitamin A) when available, no pellets (as their are issues with plucking primarily in the males), click Here to see information from Laurella Desborough on the reasons why not to feed pellets to them. Also, our Eclectus get sprouted millet, sunflower and buckwheat. Our Eclectus do not get the sprouted wheat due to the fact that we feel wheat glutens contribute to the plucking issues primarily seen in the males. Greens are also added, but only Swiss Chard, Kale, and Collard. No spinach is added to the diet as certain chemicals in the spinach bind with the calcium in the birds body, and the calcium then leaves the birds system. That is a bad thing for hens. The Eclectus also get birdie bread that is made with sweet potatoes, mashed bananas, and pumpkin, with a base of cornmeal, not flower (once again wheat glutens). The birdie bread is posted on my recipe page. Once you have the diet down on these guys, you will have a very happy and health member of the family. Keep in mind, that with Eclectus, you need to have a very large cage. Reason being, is that you have to accommodate for a large amount of toys. Eclectus like Greys will pluck if they do not have enough amusement. Lots of destroyable toys should be on your supply list. |
